Kurdistan Region Waves Goodbye To 2020

Kurdistan was never a stranger to difficulties and hardships but even by our standards,  2020 was unprecedented. The Region was subject to Iranian missile attacks in January as retaliation for the killing of General Qasim Sulaimani by U.S. forces, the removal of Adel Abdul Mahdi from Iraqi premiership caused some unrest among the political scene; subsequently, the Region had to endure a somewhat lengthy process of appointing the new government which meant the prolonging of discussions that had the KRG and the Iraqi Federal Government in a deadlock for few years.

The Region was subject to riots and the usual intra-political tensions.  To add to the woes, the Region was exposed to the COVID-19 pandemic that swept across the world overwhelming the financial situations among other things, not assisted by yet another reduction in oil prices and continued charade adopted by the political elites in Baghdad to withheld funds from KRG put the lives of the population in a very tough situations. Despite the best efforts of the Kurdistan Regional Government, it has not been able to provide the monthly wages to civil servants.

With the emergence of the vaccine to combat the pandemic and a deal with Baghdad in the horizons and intense efforts of KRG with the reform policy as well as true resilience from the Kurdistani people, we are adamant 2021 will be a significantly improved year.

As we approach the New Year, we pray for a healthy year ahead. We hope we can put the darkest days of the pandemic behind us. And safeguard a deal with Baghdad which is imperative to ensure the livelihood of our people.

We wish everyone a joyful, healthy and prosperous New Year.
