President Masoud Barzani Delivers Speech on Yazidi Genocide

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Today marks six years since the catastrophe and crimes of genocide in Shangal. The ISIS terrorists, during this catastrophe, brutally carried out the most heinous crimes against the Yazidi brothers and sisters. That crime has created a deep wound in the people of Kurdistan and is never forgotten.

During this calamity, due to being Kurds and because of their religion and beliefs, the Yazidi Kurds were subjected to a campaign full of hatred, ignorance and loss of conscience among the terrorists.

What ISIS criminals committed against the Yazidi brothers and sisters is an extension of serious atrocities and crimes that have been carried out against the people of Kurdistan throughout history.

On this tragic anniversary, we greatly remember the martyrs and victims of Shangal, as we remember the heroic Peshemrga who with their blood liberated Shangal and Mount Shangal from the hands of the terrorists and revenged against the criminals of this tragic disaster with great courage.

I think it is necessary to stress once again that I will do my utmost to assist and support the aspirations of the Yazidi brothers and sisters for their return, with their heads held high to their homes and regions so that they can practice their normal lives in safety and stability away from injustice and persecution.

Unfortunately, after the events of the sixteenth of October, the Shangal region came under the plot from the enemies of the people of Kurdistan. At that time, and to prevent another catastrophe in which the Yazidis’ blood was shed, a deal was agreed to hand over Shangal to the Yazidis themselves in order to administer it and its territories, but the Iraqi government has not adhered to that agreement to this date and Shangal is now under the control of other people. Therefore, the Yazidis in the Shangal region are still not sure about their lives and their future. They are still living in the camps as the conditions in their areas are still not normal, and this is a real and great injustice. Therefore, it is necessary to end these abnormal conditions in Shangal and return Shangal to the hands of its true owners and implement measures to prevent the recurrence of injustice, disasters, and crimes against Yazidis and all other components.

On the anniversary of the disastrous genocide in Shangal, I reiterate that my heart is always with the Yazidi sisters and brothers and I share the sorrows of the families of the victims of that disaster that shook me to my core.

Thousands of greetings to the pure souls of Shangal's martyrs and all the martyrs of the path to the freedom for Kurdistan.
